What Validators Actually Do on Solana

Beyond buzzwords — the daily work of validating, voting, and earning commissions.

What Validators Actually Do on Solana

Validators are often described as “securing the network,” which is accurate but vague. In practice, a Solana validator runs specialized software that proposes blocks when selected as leader, validates blocks produced by others, and participates in voting to confirm ledger state.

Infrastructure requirements

Running a competitive validator demands reliable servers, low-latency networking, and monitoring. Operators patch software, manage keys, and respond to outages. Poor performance reduces rewards and can lead to stake delegators moving elsewhere. Readers evaluating validators should look at uptime history and commission — not social media presence alone.

Stake delegation

Most token holders do not run validators themselves. They delegate stake, lending voting weight to an operator while retaining ownership of tokens (subject to unstaking rules). Rewards split between the delegator and the validator’s commission rate. Liquid staking tokens complicate this picture by representing staked positions that trade separately — a topic we cover in DeFi walkthroughs.

Commission and economics

Validators set commission percentages on rewards earned by delegated stake. Lower commission is not automatically better if uptime suffers. Some readers spread delegation across multiple operators to reduce concentration risk; others prefer a single operator they can monitor closely.

Educational use of validator data

Public dashboards list stake totals, skip rates, and version adoption. We teach readers to read these metrics in our Validator & Staking Overview without endorsing specific operators. The goal is informed delegation, not optimized yield chasing.

When to dig deeper

If you plan to operate a validator yourself, you need technical runbooks beyond this article. If you delegate casually, understanding voting and commission is usually enough. Book a session when your organisation must document delegation policy for compliance review.
